The Most Rev. Mark Steven Shirey Shirilau

Archbishop Mark Steven Shirey Shirilau (Dec. 13, 1955 – Jan. 12, 2014) was the Founder and Archbishop of the Ecumenical Catholic Church and a long time resident of Riverside California.

Shirilau was the son of Marjorie Irene Thorvick and Kenneth Eugene Shirey, Brother of Paul Randall Shirey and Uncle of Coquelicot Shirey.

His spouse, Jeffery Michael Lau, whom he married on November 25th, 1984 took the combined name of Shirilau.

Archbishop Shirilau earned his Master’s Degrees in electrical engineering, business, and religion. He graduated from the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont (Bloy House) and received his master’s from the Claremont School of Theology in 1985. He received his Ph.D. in electric power systems engineering from the University of California at Irvine in 1989.

Mark Shirilau was ordained to the priesthood on December 27, 1987 and was later consecrated Bishop on July 27, 1991.

In 2013, Archbishop Shirilau assumed the position of Associate Rector of Saint John the Evangelist Seminary.

Archbishop Shirilau took ill while on a pastoral visit with clergy in Italy and died suddenly of heart failure resulting from pneumonia on January 12th, 2014 at the age of 58 – slightly less than three months after the death of his father.
